Gangtok: Just when it seemed like the Covid pandemic is nearing its end in India, another new variant has popped out in the form of the Omicron variant and it has created quite a stir in the nation.
Keeping the surging cases of the omicron strain in the country in mind, Sikkim has decided to impose new rounds of restrictions from 1 January 2022 onwards to keep the threat of omicron at bay.
The fresh curbs introduced by the Sikkim government are thought to stay in effect till 10 January 2022.
Lounge bars, cinema halls, restaurants, discos, fast food centers, bakeries, gymnasiums, spas and salons have been instructed to operate at a maximum of 50 percent capacity under these new restrictions.
Hotels, guest houses and homestays have also not been exempted from this order and they have also been instructed to follow the 50 percent capacity.
Social and political gatherings will also have to adhere to the 50 percent capacity and they will need to take prior permission from the Deputy Commissioner.
Meanwhile, nine new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in Sikkim on 30 December pushing the total tally in the state to 32,502.
According to reports, Sikkim has not reported a single case of the omicron variant so far but it could infiltrate any time given the pace at which the latest variant is spreading from state to state.
The state must keep a close eye especially on inter-state borders and hotspots such as bus terminals and railway stations so as to ensure that omicron does not find a way to sneak in.
